Firefighters were assessing a working fire at a wrecking yard in the area of West Hunt Club and Merivale roads early Monday afternoon.
Scrap and debris were in flames and the Hazmat team was on scene as crews sized up the situation at 120 Bentley Avenue. The initial call came in at 1:14 p.m.
Crews created dikes around the scene to prevent water run-off from contamination and monitored the impact on air quality. A vehicle carrying a special foam was dispatched to fight the fire.
Witnesses tweeted that they saw a huge ball of smoke rise into the sky and heard glass cracking. The plume was reportedly visible from Barrhaven.
