On Wednesday, the owners of the Fairmont Chateau Laurier announced a proposal to start a major expansion project to the iconic downtown hotel.
But as soon as renderings showing the newest addition to the rear of the hotel appeared online, they instantly set the Twitterverse into a tizzy.
The reaction ranges from, “Looks like something my kid made in Minecraft,” to “That’s the most hideous thing I’ve seen in a long while.”
@OttawaCitizen wow . Hope this isnt the final draft lol

It's like Fairmont said, "Well, if the NAC isn't going to look like ass any more, then dammit, we'll just have to carry that burden."

Even Mayor Jim Watson had something to say about the proposed design.
@jchianello this falls under the category "back to the drawing board!

It's a shame the Chateau Laurier doesn't have a distinct architectural style they could have stuck with https://t.co/tT8n0jMT5k

@OttawaCitizen Yikes, looks like something my kid made in Minecraft. Not fitting for a heritage bldg surrounded by more heritage bldgs.

@OttawaCitizen That's the most hideous thing I've seen in a long while. The city & NCC should nix this design immediately

This looks disgusting. Now that I've complained does this make me a real #Ottawa resident? #ChateauLaurier https://t.co/VezsqfYHoa

That's one of the ugliest things I've seen outside of Stalingrad https://t.co/AIbEAtq6QG

There’s at least one person, though, who thinks the design is a good idea.
I'm a fan of the Chateau Laurier design; the external views we have seen at least will take nicely to light unlike current blding #Ottawa
