More than 200 cyclists rode onto Parliament Hill on Monday, completing the fourth annual Paramedic Memorial Ride, which honours the 38 Canadian paramedics who have died in the line of duty since the number of deaths began to be recorded in the 1980s.
One hundred rode from Toronto over four days and another 110 rode from Quebec City to Ottawa, raising money for the Canadian Paramedic Memorial Foundation. According to the Ride’s website, the foundation is constructing a monument in Ottawa to commemorate those paramedics who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The Ontario ride covered 525 kilometres from Toronto to Ottawa, with the last 129-km leg beginning in Brockville on Monday. The Quebec cyclists, who covered 470 km, began their final day in Montebello, riding 80 km to the nation’s capital.
Rides also take place in Alberta and New Brunswick.
