The Suya Spot, the Carlington-area restaurant where a man was recently gunned down, is now closed at that location.

River Coun. Riley Brockington said Wednesday the property’s landlord wrote to him to say the restaurant is closed.

“You never cheer a business closing,” Brockington said. “This has been a string of issues over the years and it’s too much.”

Ottawa police have said there have been more than 100 calls to The Suya Spot at 1319 Shillington Ave. at Merivale Road. Abdi Jama, 26, was found fatally shot in the parking lot on Sept. 25. Since then, there has been more scrutiny on the restaurant, with police calling for its closure.

Brockington said residents who have been frustrated by the “rowdy nights” at the establishment will now get relief.

“Certainly the message from my community loud and clear is they were fed up with years of significant activities in the neighbourhood that they believe were linked with this establishment,” Brockington said.

The manager of the restaurant, who couldn’t immediately be reached for comment, has accused police of unfairly targeting the business.
