Ottawa police have laid charges against a second person in a Sept. 8 stabbing that occurred on Murray Street in the ByWard Market.

According to police, an attempted robbery at gunpoint turned violent after the victim stabbed one of the men accused of robbing him, shortly before 11 p.m. that night. The man was found stabbed by officers who were on patrol on Murray Street.

He was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Shortly after the man approached officers, a 911 call was placed by someone reporting he had been swarmed by three people, at gunpoint. The man also said he stabbed one of the alleged robbers.

That man was arrested in relation to the stabbing, but was eventually interviewed and released without charge.

The day after the robbery attempt, the stabbing victim was arrested and charged in hospital. He was remanded into custody by telephone.

James Shema, 19, now faces charges for robbery, pointing a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon.

On Thursday, a second suspect surrendered to police at the Elgin Street police station.

Jordan Mullin, 19, of Ottawa, has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon

Police said their investigation into the swarming continues as they hunt for two more suspects. Details are scarce, but police describe the two as black males between the ages of 17 and 21.

Anyone with information regarding this robbery, or any other robbery, is asked to call the Ottawa police’s robbery unit at 613-236-1222, ext.5116. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
