The University of Ottawa has condemned an incident in which students from various faculties are reported to have participated in a pub-crawl where they were encouraged to take part in lewd acts.
The French-language LaRotonde student newspaper reported that students who took part in the pub-crawl were given a list of challenges and awarded points for sexual behaviour such as taking off their clothes in public, drinking shots off each other’s bodies, and having sex with those judging the competition.
A statement posted Monday on the university’s web page said: “The University of Ottawa strongly condemns a recent event at which some students were encouraged to behave disgracefully, and denounces any behaviour that runs counter to the values and policies the University has implemented to prevent sexual violence on campus.”
The students were seen around town earlier this month wearing white T-shirts with the words “Vet’s Tour,” according to pictures the newspaper found on Facebook.
One person who spoke to the student newspaper on condition of anonymity said the pub-crawl’s slogan was: “It’s not peer pressure, it’s just your turn.”
“This incident reminds us that sexual violence is a societal problem, and that even though University administrators are determined to respond as required, they cannot solve this problem on their own,” the university statement said.
“Therefore, they call upon the entire University community to help change such disgraceful behaviour and improve the culture of our campus.”
A similar unsanctioned event was quickly shut down at the Université du Québec en Outaouais last month after student leaders there condemned it as a “reprehensible” example of “rape culture” on campus.
