Ottawa –Mayor Jim Watson, Barrhaven Councillor Jan Harder, and Councillor Keith Egli, Chair of the City’s Transportation Committee, along with members of the local business community, officially opened Greenbank Road today as a four-lane road between Malvern Drive and Strandherd Drive.

“The growth and prosperity of Barrhaven over the years has made the expansion of Greenbank Road a necessity since the project was first identified in 2006,” said Mayor Watson. “These improvements make it easier, and safer, to get to and from neighbourhoods, shopping and recreation facilities.”

The cost of the project was $58 million, fully funded by the City of Ottawa.

“This expansion improves the connections between communities on either side of the VIA corridor as well as communities on both sides of Greenbank Road,” said Councillor Harder. “I want to express my appreciation to residents and business owners for their patience and understanding while they waited for this project to finish.”

The project began in September 2014 and, in addition to widening the two-lane road to four, includes:

  • A grade separation at the VIA Rail crossing, creating an underpass where an at-grade crossing existed before
  • A stormwater pump station and a stormwater pond
  • Noise barriers
  • New sidewalks
  • New multi-use pathways and on-road cycling lanes.

“Greenbank Road is now a safer and more efficient route for all who need to use it,” said Councillor Egli. “The new multi-use pathway built along the VIA corridor especially provides a much-needed cross-Barrhaven cycling route.”

The end of construction makes it easier for residents to access businesses along this section of Greenbank Road.

“We appreciate the loyalty of our customers who have continued to visit us and other businesses throughout construction,” said Jason MacDonald of MacDonald Moussa Team Real Estate. “Now that construction is over, I hope everyone explores this new and improved section of Greenbank Road.”
