One person is dead following a fiery crash between three tractor-trailers that closed Highway 417 in East Hawkesbury Township on Tuesday.
Ontario Provincial Police said the trucks became engulfed in flames after the collision in the westbound lanes of the highway at about 3:40 a.m. Police officers, paramedics and the East Hawkesbury fire department all responded to the fatal crash.
“Unfortunately it was not possible to do any rescue,” said East Hawkesbury fire Chief Dominic Normand, who described how two of the trucks and their trailers were completely ablaze when firefighters first arrived.
Police did not say whether the victim was male or female. No name has been released. No one else was injured.
OPP Sgt. Angie Atkinson said preliminary information is that one of the trucks was stopped when the other two collided with it. Atkinson said police hadn’t yet confirmed which truck the victim was in.
Police said technical traffic collision investigators are at the scene of the crash to assist with the investigation. The westbound lanes of the highway are closed at County Road 14 and traffic will be detoured for several hours.
