A union representing Société de transport de l’Outaouais bus drivers in Gatineau has voted overwhelmingly to support a strike mandate as contract talks with the municipality drag on.

The mandate was given at a vote held by the drivers on Sunday. A total of 405 drivers voted to give union negotiators a strike mandate, while seven drivers voted against. The Syndicat Uni du Transport Local 591 union represents 557 drivers in Gatineau with the STO.

The strike mandate does not mean that the drivers will be going on strike, however they can call for a strike, or rotating job walk outs, now that they have the support of the membership. The union must give 72 hours notice before its members walk off the job.

Obtaining a strike mandate is a negotiating tactic that is commonly used by unions that have found themselves going an extended amount of time without a new contract.
