A Quebec man has been sentenced to three months in jail and three years of probation after pleading guilty earlier this month to serious animal cruelty charges.

Alain Marchand, of Danforth Lake in the Pontiac region, was sentenced in court in Campbell’s Bay Tuesday. He was also ordered to do 165 hours of community service.

The case came about following a 10-year investigation by the SPCA de l’Outaouais.

Investigators found malnutrition, severe injuries and neglect amongst many of the animals at his home, including at least four dogs.

A Quebec judge had earlier issued a lifetime ban on animal ownership for Marchand.

That ruling by Quebec Judge Christine Auger, was the first such ban in Quebec, according to the SPCA.

He was also fined $1,800.

“We’re very proud of the contribution that our organization made in pursuing this matter,” the SPCA said on its Facebook page.
