The cold weather has the Ontario SPCA asking for donations of winter wear for the horses and ponies it has up for adoption.

The agency says equine blanket and rain sheets are “urgently needed” in the following sizes: 60-inch medium to heavy weight turnout, 74-inch full neck heavy weight turnout, 78-inch full neck heavy weight turnout, as well as medium and heavy weight blanket liners in sizes 60, 74 and 78.

In addition, the Ontario SPCA is looking for all other sizes of winter turnout blankets and liners, rain sheets, fly sheets and fly masks, field-safe halters of all sizes, especially for Cob horses, as well as lead ropes.

The agency currently lists four horses up for adoption on its website, including a 17-year-old thoroughbred gelding named Wolverine and a 20-year pony, Roman, who has “lots of zest for a pony his age.”

Donations can be dropped off at the Ontario SPCA’s headquarters in Stouffville, or other SPCA offices including its two Eastern Ontario locations: Leeds & Grenville Animal Care Centre at 800 Centennial Rd. in Brockville and the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry branch at 550 Boundary Rd. in Cornwall.
