The county fire coordinator of Prescott Russell says he is exploring the idea of amalgamating fire departments in the county after questions were raised about a farmhouse that burned to the ground on Dec. 27.
The homeowners and neighbours were concerned about how the fire was handled after learning that although the house was closer to the village of Alfred, fire crews were dispatched from stations farther away in the municipality of Nation because the house is just across the municipal boundary.
Fire officials have argued that municipal boundaries must be respected and the fire was handled correctly.
However, county fire coordinator Aurèle Constantineau said Monday that when directors from across the province meet in Gravenhurst later this month, he will ask about their experience in amalgamating fire departments.
“One of the ways to handle this is to become a county department,” he said. “It would eliminate the municipal boundaries that we have. The closest station would answer.”
It’s not clear if there would also be cost savings, but Constantineau is investigating. There are also questions about amalgamating unionized and non-unionized firefighters. As it stands, that varies across the Prescott Russell by fire department.
Émilie Deschênes, who lost her home and her dog Booboo in the Dec. 27 fire, said luckily there was no one home at the time of the fire — but someone else might not be so lucky.
“They’re taking a chance that there would be another incident like this one,” she said.
“It’s logical to send firefighters from the closest station. Someone in distress doesn’t care about municipal boundaries.”
Deschênes said she knows that in her case, her house and Booboo would not have been saved.
“But it’s not a normal situation to wait that time just because you pay tax to the township other than the one with the closest fire station.”
