In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, the Citizen is rolling out one fact each day for 150 days until July 1, highlighting the odd, the fascinating and the important bits of Ottawa history you might not know about.

Ottawa may not have the largest Chinatown in the country, but its arch is unique among Canadian cities. Only capital cities are entitled to royal arches – known for being highly ornate – and Ottawa’s 11-metre-high archway was decorated by a team of Beijing artisans, with nine golden roofs, glazed tiles and half-a-kilogram of gold leaf.
