An Ottawa Citizen reporter has collected another award.
Matthew Pearson won this year’s Joan Gullen Award for Media Excellence in the large print category from the eastern branch of the Ontario Association of Social Workers.
He received the recognition for an article published last September on a report about helping homeless youths. A Way Home Ottawa, which was developed by local youth-focused social agencies, called for more emphasis on preventing youth homelessness, rather than focusing on emergency interventions.
One of the award reviewers credited the article for addressing a “longstanding problem in an effective and accessible way.”
The Joan Gullen Award For Media Excellence is named after a nationally recognized social justice activist.
It’s the second recognition for Pearson this month.
Pearson, who is a city hall reporter for the Citizen, was recently announced as the recipient of the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education.
