My backyard faces SE, and front faces NW, I have a big room faces NW, and almost no sun in all winter, and Has 西晒 from 3:00 to 8:45 (summer time). The T in this room is 3-4 C (even more) higher than the T in other room. I use two layer blind. also, usually the T in second floor is 2 C higher than the T in first floor. I measures the T in every room. Most people overestimated the effects of "winter没有阳光" and "summer 有西晒" in Ottawa.
Actually except in December and January (hardly the coldest days), NW facing windows can almost always receive direct sunlight late afternoon.
On the other hand, during summer time because the sun angle is very high, NW facing windows won't receive direct sunlight until 8-9pm. By then 西晒 is already mild except in those extremely hot days.
After all, 西晒 is never too hard to combat. Cellular blinds are very efficient blocking heat during summer.

新旧一个朝向新家?![]()
I have been observing the sunshine for 4 years since I moved to this house. I really wish I could receive a little Sunshine in winter, but I never see any sunshine until end of May - there is a little sunshine enters my room facing WN. BTW, do not underestimate the radiant energy of Sunshine in the Summer. I still got little 西晒,sunshine until 9:00 (yesterday), I have a very big window in living-room facing WN (but never receive sunshine in winter. This is a 4 years experience, against description you introduced. Your description is based on the model developed by those researchers. It is a model, cannot predict anytime, any location in the world correctly, maybe just give you little idea, some time it could be close the fact, but some time it is wrong. Maybe I was not at home when sunshine entered my home during day in winter. How about other people observation? While, if you use below SunCalc website to actually check the sun movement at any given date and time in say Kanata, you will see that on Dec.1st, 2016 or Feb 1st, 2017, windows facing NW indeed received sun light between 3-5pm. Of course sun light came with an angle, but at a much lower angle it would go through the window to lighten the room.

For 西晒, in the summer from 3pm to at least 7:30pm, the sun angle would be very high so no direct sun light actually goes into the room with 屋檐.
