La Machine: Your guide to road closures and transportation

If you’re thinking of trekking down to gaze at the giant horse-dragon and spider machines taking over downtown Ottawa for the next several days, be aware of a range of road closures.

The highly-anticipated street theatre production La Machine, a signature event for Ottawa 2017 celebrations, awakens on Thursday near the National Gallery. It will make its way through the downtown core from Thursday to Sunday.

The machines — Long Ma, the horse-dragon, and Kumo, the spider — are a combined 80 tonnes of clanking, articulated steel, escaping steam and window-rattling roars.

The city says to expect heavy traffic and consider public transit or walking if you’re planning on attending.

According to the City of Ottawa website, parts of the ByWard Market will also be turned into pedestrian zones throughout the next few days and bikes will not be permitted in these areas.

How to get there

Public transportation, walking and biking might be your best bet to get downtown. Be warned that there may be delays on OC Transpo and routes 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19 will be impacted by the road closures. You may experience disruptions as well route detours.

On Wednesday, there were delays of up to 40 minutes due to preparation for the event.

Delays of up to 40 minutes can be expected on route 85 due to heavy traffic on King Edward in preparation of La Machine.
