Kingston’s wandering goat will wander no more.

The wayward goat had been spotted off and on around the Limestone City’s north end near Gardiners and Sydenham roads since late August, even spawning its own Twitter hashtag: #ygkgoat.

Tuesday night, the animal was struck and killed by a tractor trailer on Highway 401.

As in life, goat fans took to Twitter to express their feelings about the ill-fated ruminant.

At least he spent the last weeks of his life free and bringing a few of us some joy, which he clearly loved, not penned up.

Cris Vilela had been chronicling the goat’s perambulations for the past few weeks via his @ygktraffic Twitter account. In return, his followers cheered the goat on and made allusions to the old Littlest Hobo TV show about a wandering husky dog. A Kingston design studio had requests to print #ygkgoat T-shirts.

“I think it was that the goat was doing what we all sort of want to do in our lives — have a complete disregard for what we’re supposed to be doing,” Vilela said Wednesday.

“It was clearly a farm animal — it had a collar, it was tagged — so it was supposed to be one particular thing and decided on its own to go out for this adventure without any regard for the rules.”

Goats have a proven record for going viral on social media. Earlier this year, a Citizen story about a Chauncey, a pygmy goat spotted in a parked car at the Ottawa Hospital, drew more than 300 comments online.

People, Vilela included, made several tries to catch the Kingston goat, but without success. A firefighter who keeps goats on his farm managed to get within a metre, before it bolted, Vilela said. He said the goat had bounded across Highway 401 at least three times before its luck ran out around 11 p.m. Thursday.

A women suffered minor injuries in a secondary collision after the goat was struck just east of Sydenham Road. Vilela was told by a witness that the goat died instantly.

Goat fans were planning to gather Wednesday night for a candlelight vigil.
