Baby Jesus and Mary have mysteriously reappeared at St. Paul’s United Church in Bancroft, more than a week after they were stolen.

Sometime Tuesday night they reappeared just as quietly as they left the church, which is set prominently on a corner in the centre town.

In the meantime, however, people rallied around the Nativity scene, even supplying a new Mary and Jesus — also anonymously and at night.

The replacements weren’t quite the same: The originals were painted plywood and the new figure of Mary holding Jesus is plastic. The original Mary was standing and the new one is leaning over the cradle, holding baby Jesus.

But the new figure the right size, and has been sitting prominently in front of the church ever since the theft.

Minister Lynn Watson’s Facebook page now raises a question: “Got a call late last night that the original Mary and baby Jesus have been found … returned to St. Pauls … now what is the theological significance of having 2 Marys,” it says.

Provincial police say they will not lay any charges, “but still wish to speak with the individuals involved.”

Bancroft is about 220 kilometres west of Ottawa.
