Police had already reported more than 40 collisions since the noon hour Friday, when freezing rain began blanketing the region, and said they expected more mayhem during the afternoon commute.
Const. Chuck Benoit said highways and other arterial roads were already congested as of 4:30 p.m. Friday, with the steady freezing rain and related fender benders across the city compounding rush hour frustrations.
One serious head-on collision closed a section of Greenbank Road from Hunt Club to Fallowfield. Police are asking motorists to avoid the area, and said traffic has already backed up significantly in both north-south directions.
Two people were sent to hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries, and a third was treated by paramedics and released at the scene.
Another collision caused heavy traffic congestion on Hwy. 417 near Anderson Road just after noon Friday, with traffic backed up in both directions on the highway.
Police are asking motorists to ensure all windows are clear of ice before heading out on the roads.
“That’s your visibility from inside and outside,” said Benoit, while reminding dirvers to slow down. “Most of the collisions we’ve seen today are form people driving too fast for the conditions or not giving themselves enough space between vehicles.”
