The City’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee today approved measures to improve the Cranberry Creek Municipal Drain, a large watershed located around the village of North Gower, in accordance with the Drainage Act.

The Committee approved a new City by-law to implement improvements outlined in an engineer’s report, which was commissioned to address concerns over increased flooding. The report proposes installing a pump-station, control structure and dyke system, modernizing plans and profiles for maintenance, and changing the drainage area. The work is expected to help reduce flooding, improve drainage and enhance crop production.

The estimated price tag for the proposed work is $1.6 million. All costs would be recovered through assessments to the benefiting landowners, including the City and the Province.

Items approved at today’s Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee still need to be approved by City Council, and a final approval would only take place following the Court of Revision process outlined in the Drainage Act. A Court of Revision meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 23.
