The national capital region’s jobless rate plummeted in April to 4.4 per cent from 4.8 per cent in March, courtesy of 8,000 net new jobs while the labour force increased just 4,500.
It was the lowest unemployment rate since before 2001.
The dramatic drop in April’s jobless rate in the capital region took place entirely on the Ottawa side where the unemployment rate fell to 4.2 per cent from 4.9 per cent in March.
In Gatineau, the jobless rate edged up to 4.8 per cent from 4.7 per cent.
Gains in employment were widespread across the capital region but especially in transportation and warehousing, professional services, retailing, construction and, yes, government.
Nationally, Statistics Canada says the economy lost 1,100 jobs in April and the unemployment rate held steady at 5.8 per cent.
