Major crime detectives are looking for whoever picked up a homicide victim before his body was discovered shot on Russell Road earlier this month.

They are also trying to identify the vehicle the person may have been driving.

Police now believe that “person(s) of interest” picked up Opiny P’Ochieng shortly after he walked away from the corner of Cantin Street and Montreal Road in Vanier at about 3 a.m. May 5.

A passerby spotted the 49-year-old’s body on the west shoulder of Russell Road near Southvale Crescent at about 3:40 a.m. and called 911.

Police confirmed that morning that they were investigating a homicide. The cause of death was a gunshot wound.

Police say they’re looking for the vehicle P’Ochieng traveled in — no description was available — and anyone who interacted with P’Ochieng during that time period.

Family and friends described the victim of Ottawa’s 12th homicide of 2018 as quiet but funny and simply “a nice guy.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the city police’s major crime unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5493. Anonymous tips can be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or by downloading the Ottawa police app.
