The eastbound Highway 401 near Napanee was expected to be closed into the evening Wednesday after a tractor-trailer loaded with frozen pizzas burned so hot it melted the roadway.

The truck crashed east of the Palace Road interchange at 4:30 a.m. caught on fire and “completely burned,” Napanee OPP reported.

The Loyalist Fire Department put out the flames but by late morning the OPP reported that the eastbound lanes were expected to be closed for at least eight hours because the fire caused so much damage to the roadway that it has to be resurfaced before traffic can safely flow.

Vehicles stuck within the closed area were being escorted out by police.

The detour was from Palace Road to County Road 2 to County Road 4.
