More than 70 seniors were forced to flee from their residence early Sunday morning after a four-alarm fire broke out in the garage of The Meridian retirement home in Centrepointe.

Paramedics said they triaged 75 residents, who were taken to the nearby Ben Franklin Place, where the city’s office of emergency management established an information centre for residents and their families.

No one was injured in the fire. Paramedics said one resident was treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Fire officials said the blaze started on the roof and attic of a parking structure, and firefighters were able to contain the flames to the common area that links 1 and 3 Meridian Place.

Officials said about 60 units were affected by smoke.

Paramedics, city officials, and those with the Red Cross and Salvation Army worked with residents to arrange temporary shelter.

“Incidents like the Meridian Fire are extremely stressful for the people affected. Our medics are doing their very best to comfort the residents,” Ottawa Paramedic Service officials said via Twitter.

Fire officials and paramedics co-ordinated with Meridian staff, going room to room to catalogue each of the residents’ medications, then delivering and administering them at the reception centre.

Ottawa fire investigators and the Office of the Fire Marshal remained on scene Sunday afternoon.

The cause of the fire was not immediately know.
