A 145-metre tanker ship ran aground early Tuesday morning on the St. Lawrence Seaway.

The Prescott Anchor was the first to report that the Chem Norma, an oil/chemical tanker flagged by the Marshall Islands and bound for Sarnia, was grounded west of Morrisburg Beach, about 80 kilometres south of Ottawa along the busy shipping channel.

Bystanders have been snapping photos of the vessel and sharing them on social media.

The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp.’s traffic tracker lists the vessel as stopped, then heading to anchorage in Morrisburg.

The website marinetraffic.com reported its position as “aground.”

You heard 1st on Prescott Anchor. Ship speed 11.0 knots at Murphy Isl then down to 8.4 knots before hit. Assuming no spill/leak as both CCGS Griffon & Private Roberson, V.C. at Prescott and not (yet) dispatched, Ship does not appear in the channel @MarineDelivers @MorrisburgNews pic.twitter.com/0WfbSbI0ln
