Gatineau police now say an attempted child luring near a school was actually just a man trying to help a boy caught in the rain.

It has closed its investigation.

Police earlier this week increased their presence near Clément and Sabourin streets after a boy reported being approached by a suspicious man Monday morning.

Police said it happened around 8:15 a.m. when the boy, who attends La Traversée school, was waiting for a bus. The boy said the man attempted to lure him into a vehicle, but the boy fled to a car driven by an adult he knew.

Police said Friday that the man presented himself at the police station after hearing of the incident in the news. The man admitted approaching the boy but said he tried to give him a golf umbrella. The boy was caught in heavy rain and was only wearing a T-shirt.

Police said the man is known to people around the school and they have no concerns about him. There is no danger to the public.
