Quebec’s police watchdog has opened an investigation into the death of a 28-year-old man early Thursday who died of injuries sustained when he was struck by a car while being chased by Gatineau police/

The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes said in a release that preliminary information indicates police were called to the Casino de Lac-Leamy at about 1:20 a.m. where a man was allegedly attempting to break into and steal parked vehicles.

An officer arriving at the scene quickly spotted a man fitting the suspect’s description and got out of his cruiser to try to intercept the suspect.

The suspect apparently fled, running into traffic and was struck by a vehicle on Montford Boulevard.

The suspect died in hospital at about 4:30 a.m.

The BEI reached out to the Sûreté du Québec for assistance and a more than 10 investigators and forensic specialists have been assigned to the case.

The EIB asks anyone who has witnessed this event to contact him via his website at www.bei.gouv.qc.ca

Similar to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, Quebec’s BEI is responsible for investigating all cases where a person dies or is seriously injured during a police intervention or while detained by police.
