Emergency watercraft and a helicopter continued their search Saturday for a 20-year-old man who disappeared Friday night in the rapids in the Ottawa River in Whitewater Township.
The man, from Petawawa, had gone for a swim with another Petawawa man shortly after the dinner hour, police reported.
“Both men became caught in a section of rapids on the Ottawa River adjacent to Grants Settlement Road and were swept away,” police said in a release.
The second man was eventually able to make his way to shore and called for help.
Police and paramedic search crews were assisted by several experts from whitewater rafting and touring companies in the area.
Saturday morning, the helicopter joined the scene as well as members of the OPP underwater search and recovery unit.
Whitewater Township is about 130 kilometres northwest of Ottawa.
