Two adults and three young children are unable to return to their south-end home following a kitchen fire Monday night.
Just before 8 p.m., Ottawa Fire Services responded to a report of black smoke at 104 Irma Private off Heatherington Road. Fire fighters entered the home to find a fire in the kitchen with the occupants of the end unit row house having already left. They quickly extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading beyond the room.
There were no reported injuries, according to OFS, and victims services was assisting the family of five.
Damage is estimated at $40,000. A fire inspector is investigating the cause of the fire.
OFS reminded the public that “if you are simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you’re baking.”
