Firefighters braved intense flames to rescue a dozen dogs from a fire that completely destroyed the SPCA of Western Quebec Sunday night but an unknown number of animals perished.
Crews ultimately had to flee the building as the two-storey structure 659 Auguste Mondoux Street in Gatineau collapsed.
They’d been summoned at 10:48 p.m. when several passersby spotted flames and called 911.
A total of 31 firefighters and 11 trucks tackled the fire, which had already engulfed the entire roof as the first crews arrived.
Damage is pegged at $580,000.
Fire department investigators are probing the cause.
