China will resume domestic passenger flights to and from Wuhan starting April 8, when travel restrictions placed on the original epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak are to be lifted, according to the Hubei provincial transportation authority.

Speaking on Wednesday, the authority's deputy head Wang Benju said that while most domestic flights will resume, all flights from Wuhan to Beijing and international destinations will remain suspended.

On Tuesday, the Hubei provincial government announced that travel restrictions on Wuhan will be lifted on April 8, and residents that have been issued green health QR codes will be able to leave the city and move about.

China saw 67 new imported coronavirus cases yesterday, but no new locally transmitted ones

China’s National Health Commission reported 67 new imported cases of the novel coronavirus yesterday.

That brings the total number of imported cases to 541 in mainland China.

China appears to have passed the worst of the pandemic. Nearly all new cases inside the country have been imported in recent days -- no new locally transmitted cases were reported yesterday -- and hard-hit Hubei province has begun lifting some of the stringent measures put in place to stop the virus from spreading.

Total numbers: By the end of Wednesday in mainland China, the country had confirmed 81,285 coronavirus cases and 3,287 deaths. More than 74,000 have recovered and been discharged from hospital.

The pandemic began in mainland China last December — but now, the country is seeing close to zero new local transmissions each day, as the situation worsens elsewhere around the world.

The country is beginning to lift travel restrictions and strict lockdowns that have been in place for months — but people are still cautious.
"As you start to ease restrictions ... you're going to have people moving around starting to resume life," said CNN's International Correspondent David Culver.
"Will that cause numbers to go back up? It is something they're mindful of here. Even the residents we've spoken with have quite frankly told us as soon as the gates open, so to speak, they are in no rush to get out of their homes after 70-plus days of lockdown."

As the pandemic hits the US and Europe particularly hard, there are also rising fears in China of a second wave of imported cases from overseas, similar to the one being seen in Hong Kong.
"That's why they have now essentially banned all foreign travelers into mainland China," Culver said. "You go back a few weeks, it was the rest of the world that was really concerned with travelers coming from China. Now it's China really worried about travelers coming from every other country."

From journalist Yuli Yang in Singapore

China confirmed 55 new cases of the coronavirus Thursday, bringing the total number of active cases to 3,292. The majority of those, 2,896, are in Hubei province, where the virus was first detected late last year.

Of the new cases, all but one were imported, China's National Health Commission said.

Five more deaths were also recorded, all in Hubei province, four of which were in the provincial capital Wuhan. The country has recorded 3,292 deaths in total related to the virus.

China's national reported number of confirmed cases -- which includes both active cases and people who have recovered -- now stands at 81,340, behind the United States, which has now confirmed over 82,000 cases.

China reported 54 new novel coronavirus patients Friday -- bringing the total number of active cases to 3,128, according to the National Health Commission.
All of the new cases were travelers coming into China from overseas.

On Saturday, China begins its most stringent measures to curtail inbound travelers by banning most foreign nationals – including those holding Chinese visas and residency permits. Only foreign nationals granted visas after March 26 will be allowed entry.

China, which managed to mostly halt domestic transmission, has reported 649 cases from inbound travelers.

Three additional deaths were confirmed in China Friday, taking its death toll to 3,295.

Of the total 81,349 cases in the country, 74,971 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospital.

The local epidemic transmission of the novel coronavirus in China is “basically blocked,” National Health Commission spokesperson Mi Feng said on Sunday.

The current number of confirmed cases in the country dropped to fewer than 3,000 on March 28, therefore local transmission has been blocked, Feng said at a press conference.

However, he added that the possibility of a new wave of transmission from imported cases remains high, as there are 693 confirmed imported cases from 42 countries.
Here's some background: China is closing its border to most foreigners amid fears of imported novel coronavirus cases causing a second outbreak in the country where the infection was first detected.

In a statement last week, the government said that "in view of the rapid spread of Covid-19 across the world, China has decided to temporarily suspend the entry into China by foreign nationals holding visas or residence permits" as of March 28.

Chinese health authorities will include asymptomatic cases of the novel coronavirus in their official count starting Wednesday, according to an announcement on Tuesday.

The move comes amid growing public concern over asymptomatic cases, of which 1,541 were under medical observation in China by the end of Monday,
according to the National Health Commission (NHC). This includes including 205 cases imported from overseas.

Officials will also further tighten screening and quarantine rules targeting asymptomatic cases -- defined as people who have tested positive for the virus without displaying any symptoms -- said Chang Jile, a senior official with the NHC, at a press conference in Wuhan.

Until now, asymptomatic cases have not been counted as confirmed cases under Chinese government guidelines.

Asymptomatic cases – as well as their close contacts – will be isolated for 14 days immediately upon discovery.

Their quarantine will only be lifted after they twice test negative for coronavirus, in tests administered 24 hours apart. If they develop symptoms during isolation, they will become confirmed cases and undergo treatment at designated hospitals.

On Monday, a taskforce on the virus chaired by Premier Li Keqiang, the country’s deputy leader, urged “placing priority on asymptomatic cases, from detection, contact tracing, to isolation and treatment, in order to lock in previous gains and plug potential loopholes in the containment,” according to a government statement.

A woman in Henan province in central China was infected with the deadly virus last week after coming in contact with a friend, a local doctor who was later identified as an asymptomatic case.

As the Chinese government prepares to lift lockdown measures at the original epicenter of the pandemic, the Henan story has stirred intense interest and anxiety over how infectious asymptomatic carriers are, and whether the authorities have been transparent enough in reporting such cases.
