Mayor Jim Watson and Kanata South Ward Councillor Allan Hubley today virtually presented the Mayor’s City Builder Award to Paul O’Kane in honour of his outstanding volunteerism and contributions to the community.

A long-time resident of Kanata, Mr. O’Kane has volunteered extensively with local sports. He has coached his son’s Little League baseball teams and volunteered as team manager and fundraiser for his son’s hockey teams over the past 11 years. Under his fundraising leadership, the Kanata Blazers Major Pee Wee AA team came in second at the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup, raising more than $21,000 for DEBRA Canada to support Jonathan Pitre.

Mr. O’Kane was president of the Kanata Little League Baseball Association from 2012 to 2016 and from 2018 to 2020. He also coached, mentored other coaches and volunteered for the Scott Tokessy Memorial Tournament, one of the biggest charity baseball tournaments in Canada. As president of the association, he watched enrollment in baseball increase and led his teams to participate in the Scott Tokessy Tournament to support CHEO.

Following the Fort McMurray wildfires in 2016, Mr. O’Kane sent supplies donated by the community, and in 2019, he organized pizza deliveries from Kanata Baseball to the volunteers helping with the floods along the Ottawa River. Over the past two years, his hockey teams fundraised for Friedreich's ataxia in honour of a local boy with the disease.

The Mayor’s City Builder Award is a civic honour, created to recognize an individual, group or organization that, through outstanding volunteerism or exemplary action, has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to making our city a better place today and for the future. This may include lifelong service, outstanding acts of kindness, inspiring charitable work, community building or other exemplary achievements.

Individuals, groups or organizations may be nominated by Members of Council or the public.

The award is presented at the beginning of each Council meeting.
