If you can support local, now is the time!
The public health restrictions and guidelines in place due to COVID-19 are putting a major strain on restaurants, retailers and other small businesses. When a restaurant closes its dining room, it’s bad news – not only for the owner but also for servers, kitchen staff and custodians. These jobs are often held by young people, minorities, new Canadians or other groups that might be suffering more than most as a result of the pandemic.
Ottawa is home to a strong federal workforce and a vibrant private sector. We are more economically resilient than many municipalities, being a government town, but it’s Ottawa’s warmth and diversity that make us proud to call this city home. We enjoy a small-town vibe even though we’re a city of a million people. Small businesses contribute to that in a huge way. They bring vitality to our neighbourhoods and main streets, and right now they need our help.
Read on to find out how you can make a difference.
1. Buy local
Visit Ottawa.ca/buylocal to find links and resources that will make it easier for you to support local businesses. It’s your gateway to incredible food and take-out options, one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques, unique services and more.
2. Find new favourites
When it comes to ordering in, there’s never been a better time to branch out. Ottawa’s food bloggers and social media influencers have been showcasing some of the amazing options out there for take-out and curb-side pickup. And don’t forget to BYOB (bring your own blanket!) to a neighbourhood patio and enjoy dining outside.
There are many wonderful Ottawa-area writers and photographers to check out. Here are a few to get you started:
@foodies_in_the_613 @amy613 @loveottawa @ninanearandfar @theingdex
@yowchatter @yowdotfoodie @yumyumyow @yowfoodie @foodsofottawa
3. Share the love
If there was ever a time to shamelessly plug your favourite local businesses on social media, this is it. We want all our favourite places to survive – and hopefully with our combined buying and promotional power they can thrive!
Whenever you support local, share the experience with 300 of your closest friends by using some of the hashtags below. And don’t forget to tag the business!
#BuyLocal #yowmakers #ottawamakers #shoplocalottawa #support613 #igersottawa
