The Citizen invited federal candidates from the eight Ottawa ridings to send us a short article by Aug. 31 explaining what they would do for their riding if elected. Kevin Hua was among those who took us up on the offer.


During this pandemic, we have witnessed the complete and total failure of for-profit, long-term care facilities to care for and protect some of our most vulnerable population and loved ones. In Ontario, for-profit long-term care homes had two times the rate of infection and 78-per-cent more fatalities from the virus compared to their non-profit counterparts. By April 2020, long-term care homes represented half of the infections in Ottawa and 85 per cent of the deaths. The statistics are starking, disturbing, and distressing.

But they’re further compounded by the complete abdication of responsibility of care among private, for-profit long-term care homes. They have repeatedly failed to take important preventative measures to avoid outbreaks in the first place and even after having already faced initial outbreaks.

However, long-term care homes have always had a notorious reputation for their questionable care and management even prior to the pandemic. They have been known to be rife with chronic occurrences of abuse and neglect towards their residents. A CBC Marketplace investigation found that 85 per cent of long-term care facilities are repeat offenders, with instances of mistreatment, abuse, and neglect in violation of legal regulations. This same culture is what led to the abject collapse of responsibility and care under the strain of the pandemic.

Let’s be clear, the pandemic didn’t create a dangerous, neglectful, and abusive environment in our long-term care homes, it simply revealed one. Only with the increased media attention during the pandemic did we see the true horrors and chronic problems that occurred in long-term care homes.​

In the riding of Carleton, we have numerous long-term care facilities in our local communities, where many of our loved ones currently reside. Many of them are privately owned and operated by large corporate chains such as Revera, Chartwell and Sienna, with a priority for profit rather than for people. This was clearly demonstrated when, during the pandemic, these corporate chains paid millions to their shareholders while taking pandemic financial aid, and these outbreaks occurred.​

We need to bring long-term care homes under principles similar to the Canada Health Act, creating and implementing a consistent and enforced national standard of care of these long-term facilities to end the abuse and neglect. We also need to eliminate the profit motive and nationalize private facilities so they may be operated effectively, prioritizing the care of their residents.

I deem it necessary, even vital, that these steps be taken to reform a broken care system and give the dignity and decency long-term residents deserve. We cannot have faith that private profit and corporate interests can safely and securely care for our loved ones.

我倾向自由党，但是反对majority. 如果自由党支持率继续上涨，我会考虑策略投票给保守党

村民们，今天是提前投票第一天，出去投票啊。提前投票，又安全，又省心。。。

不要拖到最后一天，人挤人。

如果自由党，NDP和绿党领导凑在一起开个会，看看有哪些选区保守党是第一但没有过半，三个党哪个党排第二，就让其推出单一候选人，其他两党不推候选人。。。这样三个党最后应该都能增加一些MP

不过这当然是不现实的，可能会被攻击是变相联合政府，而联合政府在加拿大联邦政治中不是一个好词。。。

好像经常有人提策略性投票，有时候玩不好，就无法达到预期效果。

那个区保守党和自由党的拥趸占了绝大多数，恕我直言，Ndp在那个区没戏

從沒投過 PP，倒是每次選舉都看到他本人來拉票，也願意和選民聊幾句。雖然他嘴裡都是妖魔化 Trudeau 沒什麼原創。
其他黨的候選人怎麼都不來啊！想投你也請伸手拉一把是不是。PP 的支持率從未過半，只是左派不團結。

大致讀來上面的政見，感覺 NDP 可以更｢衝刺｣一些，不只是身份政治、｢我慘，故我正確｣那一套，而是在更多領域領先時代、超越主流，
比如綠黨前些時候喊出制裁以色列這種大快(部份)人心，取消 pipe line，20xx 年全國電動車... 便能爭取到年輕票。
現在綠黨又散了... 這也是 NDP 取而代之的機會。不然這些票又回流給自由黨了。不過也是這樣才有打倒 PP 的機會呢。
