The Yukon government is calling on Canada's telecommunications regulator to ensure that residents in the northern part of the country have access to comparable internet service quality and rates as those in the rest of Canada. During a CRTC panel discussion, Sean McLeish, the assistant deputy minister of information and communications technology for the territory, stated that internet service quality in Northern Canada, particularly in rural and remote communities, is inferior to that available in the rest of the country.

While the government would like to see viable competition and sustainable competition, it recognizes that providing services in some areas can be challenging due to the region's vastness and low population. Therefore, McLeish is seeking the commission to establish a framework for comparable affordability, reliability, quality, and innovation, where market forces don't encourage competition.

This year's report by Wall Communications Inc. found that internet prices in the Far North are considerably higher than in the rest of Canada, with limited options for consumers. Northwestel, which Bell Canada Enterprises Inc. owns, is the only company that offers comprehensive internet services in Northern Canada. The CRTC is seeking feedback on measures to enhance telecommunications in Far North communities and promote reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
