Trump called Bezos to complain about reports Amazon was listing cost of tariffs, White House officials say
From CNN’s Alayna TreenePresident Donald Trump called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos this morning to complain about reports that his company was considering displaying the cost of US tariffs next to prices for certain products on the company’s website, two senior White House officials told CNN.
The call came shortly after one of the senior officials phoned the president to inform him of the story, first reported by Punchbowl News.
“Of course he was pissed,” one of the officials, granted anonymity to speak candidly, told CNN. “Why should a multi-billion-dollar company pass off costs to consumers?”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt also made clear during a press briefing earlier today that Trump, who she had spoken to earlier that morning, viewed it as a “hostile political act.”
What Amazon is saying: Soon after the call between Trump and Bezos, an Amazon spokesperson released a statement clarifying the move “was never a consideration for the main Amazon site and nothing has been implemented on any Amazon properties.”
The spokesperson later sent CNN a revised statement, adding: “This was never approved and not going to happen.”
Trump and Bezos have grown increasingly close in recent months. Multiple Trump administration officials told CNN that Bezos often visits the West Wing when in Washington to meet with the president, and the two speak frequently by phone.
