The City hosted a recognition event today, to express appreciation to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) for its continued support of community projects in Ottawa. The Hunt Club-Riverside Park Community Centre, which served as the backdrop for today’s event, is just one City facility benefitting this year.

This year is a special one for OLG as it celebrates its 50th anniversary – which started with the Wintario lottery in 1975. Over those 50 years, OLG has proudly supported countless community projects in cities, towns and regions across Ontario – including Ottawa.

The City receives funding annually from OLG, which is revenue generated from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Ottawa, and is placed in the City’s general revenue account and reinvested in services and initiatives to benefit residents. This year, the City received more than $6.6 million in support.

The Hunt Club-Riverside Park Community Centre received some important upgrades to revitalize this community hub that hosts a wide range of activities and programming for every age group, from pre-schoolers to seniors. The work included:

  • Replacing the aging floor in the gymnasium – which hosts many fitness and drop-in sports activities.
  • Installing new windows and doors – making it more energy efficient, improving comfort for all users and enhancing security.

Since the gaming site originally opened in February 2000, Ottawa has received over $113 million in non-tax gaming revenue from OLG as a casino host community.

In addition to the Hunt Club-Riverside Park Community Centre, a portion of the funding from April 2023 to March 2025 was invested in other recreation infrastructure projects, including:

  • Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex – Orléans
  • CARDELREC Recreation Complex Goulbourn
  • Churchill Seniors Centre
  • Dovercourt Recreation Centre
  • Glebe Community Centre
  • Jack Purcell Community Centre
  • Old Town Hall - Kanata
  • Pinecrest Recreation Complex
  • Richelieu-Vanier Community Centre
  • Sandy Hill Community Centre

These investments make our recreational facilities better for community members, while improving energy efficiency and making them more cost effective for the City.

OLG funding is also invested towards enhancing several City facilities, including cultural centres, long-term care homes and fire stations.

Quotes

“Our recreation and cultural facilities play vital roles in our community. They serve as important gathering places for all our residents, including toddlers to seniors, to meet, take part in activities, and remain active for their physical and mental health. We wish OLG a happy 50th anniversary and extend our thanks for their long-standing support of our communities and residents."

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe

"Hunt Club-Riverside Park Community Centre is a vibrant cornerstone of this community. It welcomes residents of all ages through its doors each day to take part in a wide range of activities – from fitness classes, dance lessons, arts and crafts, to after-school programs and social gatherings. On behalf of the Hunt Club-Riverside Park Community Centre and the residents of River Ward, I thank OLG for their support."

““OLG is proud to be a vital part of the City of Ottawa. For the last 50 years, since the organization’s start in 1975, 100 per cent of OLG profits are reinvested in Ontario to support provincial priorities. From critical infrastructure to important local programs, to community festivals OLG’s profits are hard at work in the City of Ottawa and across our province to build stronger communities. We also appreciate the contribution of gaming employees at Hard Rock Casino & Hotel Ottawa who are making life in your community that much better. When you play at an Ontario casino, you play for Ontario.”

Kathleen Devine, OLG’s Senior Municipal Relations Manager
