In Ottawa, Francophones have played a central role in shaping the social, cultural, and economic identity of our city. From the earliest days of Bytown 200 years ago to the modern and dynamic capital we know today, French‑speaking residents have influenced Ottawa’s growth and helped build a community rooted in diversity and inclusivity.
That legacy remains strong today. The City of Ottawa continues to recognize both official languages as having the same rights, status and privileges. This commitment is reflected in the active offer of bilingual municipal services provided, for example, by the fully bilingual teams who support residents daily at the 3‑1‑1 call centre. Across the municipal organization, new tools, events, and initiatives also reinforce the importance of the French language and the vitality of the community that speaks it.
An annual tradition: The Mayor’s Francophone RendezVous
One of the City’s longest‑standing traditions is the annual Francophone RendezVous with the Mayor, held this year on March 27. Now in its 19th edition, the event celebrates the ongoing contributions of Ottawa’s Francophone community. Each year, community members and organizations are recognized for their leadership, commitment, and impact, illustrating the diversity and strength of the Francophone presence in Ottawa.
This year, the City honoured Maison Marie‑Louise, a cherished organization located in Vanier. Founded in 1997 by the Daughters of Wisdom congregation, the organization was created to support individuals and families in need of temporary help. Since then, Maison Marie‑Louise has become deeply rooted in the community and now plays an essential role in the daily lives of many families. Through its programs and services, it supports the well‑being of households and helps build a caring, united community grounded in compassion and harmony.
OttaVoix: Spotlighting Francophone staff voices
The City has also launched new ways to highlight the contributions of Francophone employees. The OttaVoix podcast, which now includes more than 10 French‑language episodes, features 17 Francophone staff from across the municipal administration. As hosts or subject matter experts, they help residents better understand how the City works by explaining their roles, sharing behind‑the‑scenes insights, and demystifying municipal services.
Through OttaVoix, listeners discover the people who help deliver essential services every day, shining a light on Francophone employees whose work strengthens the City’s commitment to bilingual service delivery.
Supporting Ottawa’s bilingual identity
Through community events, staff‑focused initiatives, and tools that support daily service delivery, the City of Ottawa continues to champion bilingualism. These efforts ensure that residents can seamlessly interact with their municipal government in the official language of their choice while celebrating Ottawa as a proud and vibrant city, shaped by its bilingual character.
