Need a lawyer to review purchase contract?

Does anyone know when is a laywer needed if buying new home from builder, is the time when signing a purchase contract now or six months ahead right before closing. I'm just wondering if I can sign the contract before it is reviewed by a layer.

I signed the contract first then the builder sent a copy to my lawyer... but I don't know others since this is my first time to buy a home here..

If you are buying from a large builder, then the contract is pretty standard. I don't think you need a lawyer for that, but I would sit down with the builder's salesperson and go over each clause one by one and ask questions before signing the agreement to purchase.
