Diego现在吃Nutro's Natural Choice Large Breed Puppy Chow.

Diego now has flaky itchy skin, I wonder if this is caused by the dog chow.
What's your dog eating?

From a Veternarian point of view, dog food with the least animal by-products, carbs (corn starch), and fat (chicken fat) would be the best.

When you buy dog food, take a look at the ingredient on the package, the first ingredient should always be meat: chicken or beef. If the first ingredient is corn starch it will likely cause your dog to have more bowl movement, and it provides less nutrients and will make your dog fat.

I would recommend Medical (only available at the vet's office), Hills Science Diet and Pedegree, Nutrience. You should as your vet for the best suitable food if your dog has a pre-existing condition such as dry, sensitive skin, is obese or hypo-allergic.

Take a look at Medi-cal, it's only $16 for a 4 kg bag:

Hey Shayla, do you work with a vet? Yes I've done a lot of research on pet food, but the general concensus is not positive on Pedigree and Science Diet. My vet office supplies Hills Prescription Diet, but Diego doesn't like the taste. He was on the special intestinal canned PD diet for a few days.

Here are the ingredients in Nutro's large puppy chow. I'd really appreciate your comment on this:

I've also heard good things about Wellness, Solid Gold and Innova's Evo, have you had any experience with these brands?
I can't find anything on Medical, but Diego was on Nutrience junior and it made him sick with diarrhea (actually we are not completely sure of this, but after switching to Nutro, the diarrhea stopped).

My puppy is having IAMS now.

I'm not sure whether IAMS is as bad as others describe.

But he is having his IAMS happy, and he is a healthy guy.

Really? I have not heard good things about IAMS, but if your little guy is happy and healthy, then who's to say it's not good.

What kind of dog is your little guy?

Science Diet is not that good either.

Did you switch the food abruptly? Pets that are used to one diet can develop diarrhea when changing diet too quickly. The better way is to gradually introduce to the new diet.

Why don't you try something more natural. Generally speaking, pet foods that use human grade ingredients are better. Stay away from pet foods that use a lot of corn, corn meal, soy, . Cats and dogs are primarily carnivores (meat-eaters), so pet foods that contain high protein (and human grade protein source) are better than those contain a lot of carbohydrates.

Price is NOT a factor in determining good pet food. LEARN TO READ THE LABELS. Generally speaking the first 5 ingredients in the label are pretty good indicators of good/bad pet food. See the comparison below:

Yes I do work at a vet's office.
IAms switched their ingredients in dog food once, I think it was two years ago, and it had caused a lot of dogs to react sickly (diareahea, vomiting), my clinic was packed with sick dogs for weeks because of Iams.

Although I do not know much about IAms now, I would never touch it again.

Hills Science diet, I was referring to the prescription diet that you have to get your vet to prescribe to your dog (it comes in i/d, w/d, r/d, etc), not the ones you buy from a grocery or pet store.

This is Nutro large puppy chow? I have not heard about it but the ingredients look fine. Although I personally would stick with certified dog food, this one looks fine to me and if your dog likes it keep him on it.

Have you tried Medi-Cal Development? It's an excellent supplement for puppies and you can get it from your vets without a prescription. When I first got my puppy, she was on Nutrience and pooping 5 times a day, but after 2 weeks of switching her to Medi-Cal development her bowl movement had reduced to 2 times a day. Most food was absorbed by her body, this is how you decide if the dog food is suitable for your dog.

I sent you a QQH.
