If we go across the boarder to the US by drive, is it OK to buy some stuff at the duty free shop and/or shops in the US then come back right away on same day? What is the maximum purchase amount allowed per person in a day?

yes, there is a max on the value of the stuff you can bring in canada based on the time away from Canada. Good trying, though.
