Check Engine 灯亮了

本人的Corolla Check Engine 灯亮了，Toyota 人说是 gas line 有水汽 (vapor), 先清了灯。
2天后灯又亮了。请问斑竹和大虾们：
此类问题严重吗？车能否继续开？
修理费用如何？
如果要更换车底 和 hood 内部所有必要的 gas 管线 又要几多银子？

buy a code reader and reset it,
my friend went to the dealer,they told him the gas tank cab wasn't tight caused the the problem

ODB2 reader cost $100-$300 each.
Little bit expensive, and not sure if cover all manufactur's today's extended error-codes ?
CAN is one of the new standard related with ODB2, not sure today's reader can be used in the future?
Update or upgrade to support future ISO/manufacture defined codes is another issue. free? or $$$ ?
Also buy a plam type, or PC-connected type is a question?

So not decided if need to buy it, or when to buy it.
any comments?

What year's model is your Corolla? If it is pre-2004, gas cap will never trigger the Check Engine light. Toyota played a game and cheated public. It was sued by California authority a few years ago because of this and got penality.

I bought a factory maunal for my 1997 RAV4 and an Auterra dyno-scan tool early this year.

Toyota provides 12 CARB mandated signals and 21 Toyota enhnaced signals. My scan tool can read all 12 CARB signal (California Air Resource Board), but none of Toyota enhanced signals.

31 SAE controlled (The Society of Automotive Engineers) generic trouble codes and 4 manufaturer controlled (Toyota specific) trouble codes are available in 1997 RAV4. I don't know how many of these DTC my scan tool support.

CAN is used by very few cars now. OBDII scan tool is enough for next a few years.

It is not worthy to buy a code reader. With the same amount of money, you can get a scan tool software and accessories. Use your laptop, you can not only read code but also real time data, as well as dyno test.

Yes, I see the PC-software version can do CO2, etc test, and also
after maintenance real-time engine-status/performance test, very good.

Maybe I will buy one and play with the car next spring or summer.

OBDII scan tool is enough for next a few years..

Japanese car makers traditionally use less advance electronic techniques than domestic car makers. For my RAV4, No any scan tools can read ABS trouble codes. To read the codes, I have to remove a jump pin from a diagnostic port and short another 2 pins with a wire, then turn key on to count number and interval of flash of ABS warning light.

Water vapor will not hurt your car, except poor drivability. If you don't feel unstable engine power, ignore it. Water in gas line should be trapped inside gas filter. Small amount of water will be purged soon during driving. Nobody replaces the gas line because of it. Different from most American cars, the gas line in Japanese cars usually hide inside the cars to avoid corrosion. Cost to replace the gas line will be skyrocket.

Malfunction of evaporation vacuum valves will result in abnormal of fuel vapor pressure, which may sets trouble codes.

Ask your dealer what codes they had read. Make some online research, then play around yourself. You will enjoy it.
