Yesterday, an event occurred on our campus that should be of concern to
all members of the University of Ottawa community.
An individual fired a weapon, apparently an air gun, from a moving car
in front of Fauteux Hall. This occurred during the daytime, when
numerous students and other individuals were in the area. Thanks to
alert eyewitnesses and the quick response of our campus security
personnel and the Ottawa police, the individual alleged to have fired
the weapon was quickly apprehended. Criminal charges have been laid.
This is a very serious matter.
Coming a day after the tragic shooting at Dawson College in Montreal,
this incident was especially distressing. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Such behavior is never appropriate nor welcome on our campus.
I call on all members of our community to remain vigilant and to
continue to ensure that we demonstrate zero tolerance for such
behaviour.
