Ottawa light rail goes ahead ― but not downtown

Ottawa city council will be building its north-south light rail line after all ― or most of it anyway.

On Wednesday, the council voted 12-11 in favour of a lighter light rail contract that cuts off the downtown portion of the route, along with about $70 million of the cost.

The shortened north-south light rail line will run from Barrhaven Centre to Bayview transit station on LeBreton Flats, just west of downtown

The line will still be designed, built and operated by the same group of companies that were in the original version of the contract.

Those studies have been completed but they do not present a very favourable picture for the light rail project. Fewer than 5,000 new riders would be attracted to public transit by this line and it seems that barely 100 cars per peak hour would be removed from our roads. While it seems that the Provincial Government will take the position that the studies' results are Ottawa's business there is some hope that the Federal Government will take a more serious look at these results and pull back their money. If you would like to see the light rail project stopped contact your federal and provincial representatives. They now hold the key.

So, write letters, make phone calls.

每个rider的cost就是
1B/5000=200K,够高的

恐怕现在的计划是最差的一个选择。Barrhaven 不能直接到downtown,要修downtown地铁还要500M,东西轻铁更成了水中花。要是都修完了,property tax至少得翻两番。
不过省了70M应该够加工资用,倒是可能兑现不加税的承诺。不过相当于cut了service.

有些人就是幼稚,以为换个市长就不修LRT.记住:政治的基础是经济,只要有钱,什么都能发生.现在的计划不伦不类,大家高兴了吧! 太天真!
