You sumbit a previous Canadian passport that:
was issued to you within the last SIX years from the date of reception of this current application,
was/is valid for FIVE years,

That means if your passport is expired less than one year ago, you can renew.

Renewal is different from extention, for example, renewal of a driver's licence. When you "renew" it, you get a new one. Correct? Renewal refers to issuing a passport to someone who was issued a passport within the last 6 years, etc.
So, eventually, you will get a new passport. But the process is simplified.
