I don't understand why the opposition parties are trying to attack the Conservative party on this.
In my opinion, it is absolutely necessary. Here is a few of my reasons:
1. Canada is a massive country that has rich resources including oil, gas, water etc. In last 10 years, we have seen so many international conflicts are triggered by trying to take control of resources owned by others. I have no doubt this situation will get even worse in the near future. In case such a conflict happens between Canada and another country (such as Russia) there is nothing else that can get across the country as fast as a fighter jet.
2. Last summer, Prime Minister Stephen Harper toured Arctic. We know many countries are trying to declare their sovereignty of Arctic. When dealing with the Arctic, there is very little that has the kind of survivability of a fighter jet in the air under those kinds of harsh conditions
3. We live in this country and love it. Canada needs a stronger defense system so that not only ourselves but also our children can live in this country without worrying much being assaulted by foreign countries.
4. To improve our air defense ability is just one step but definitely a necessary step.
