If your car is a brand new car, and you live in Ottawa, I strongly recommend you do it before snow starts to fall.
SALTED snow is very bad to iron.
Although all cars come with rust-proof, but once there is a scratch, (quite common you may roll onto ICE which is hard) because of electrochemical effect, rust starts to form.
Rust on car body is not dangerous, worse is to gas supply pipes (there are three) and brake pipes (two).
Anybody can do it, only if you have the right tools.
I will ask "does it worth?"
I rather let professionals do it for me.
They have HYDRAULIC Jet that jets up your car, then wash the underside. Leave it overnight until it is 100 % dry (this is important), then spray n layers of protective coat. I think the cheapest material is Asphalt, and of course better quality costs more.
My Subaru car dealer gave my family a good deal, 450 CAD (plus tax), and each year, they will touch up those scratches (in previous winter) and is free for life, as long as the car is under my family's name.
If Asphalt, from garage, the cost is under 300.

It depends on how long you want to keep your car, and whether your car (especially underside) has built up any RUST.
If you happen to know an HONEST mechanic, ask your mechanic to jack up your car and have a look at the underside, your mechanic should give a better advise than us.
* If there is rust on car body, body shop will first remove those rust, sand it, then apply paints..... Imagine if rust on the underside, how to remove those rust and then apply anti-rust layer, I have no clue.
