Man charged with impaired driving after fatal car crash in Oshawa

A man has been charged with impaired driving after a fatal two-car collision in Oshawa early Wednesday morning killed a 24-year-old international student, Durham Region police say.
The crash occurred just after 2 a.m. near Taunton Rd. W. and Thornton Rd. N., Durham police spokesperson David Selby said.

A grey Honda Civic was stopped at the intersection on Taunton Rd., facing west, when a black Honda Civic smashed into the rear of it. Police said both vehicles skidded across the intersection before coming to a halt on the opposite side, severely damaged.
Officers arrived at the scene and began performing CPR on a 24-year-old man, Selby said. When the man was unresponsive, he was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police said the deceased man was a foreign exchange student. His name is not being released at this time.

The driver of the black Honda survived the collision, and he has been taken into custody.
An Uber sticker could be seen on the back window of the black Honda after the collision, police said.
Kayla Whaling, a spokeperson for Uber Canada, said the person driving the Honda was once registered as an Uber driver, but hadn’t worked for the ride-sharing company in two months.
“We’ve looked further into this and can confirm this individual’s access to the Uber app was previously removed and he has not taken a trip since August,” she said.
The immediate area of the collision was initially closed down for the investigation.
Michael La Forty, 36, of Oshawa is facing several charges, including impaired operation of a vehicle causing death.

A 24-year-old man was killed when a suspected drunk driver plowed into the back of his car at an Oshawa intersection early Wednesday.
Durham Regional Police say a black Honda Civic was heading west on Taunton Rd., which has a posted speed limit of 60 km/hr, when it slammed into the rear of a silver Honda Civic at Thornton Rd. N. around 2 a.m.
“Speed appears to have been a factor based on the debris field,” Const. George Tudos said Wednesday of the crash, which remains under investigation.
“We don’t know yet if the silver Honda was stopped at the traffic light, but there was clearly a speed difference between the two vehicles,” he said, adding investigators also believe alcohol was a factor in the collision.
Tudos said officers arrived at the scene and found the driver of the silver Honda with no vital signs.
“Officers performed CPR but despite their best efforts that driver was unfortunately pronounced dead later in hospital,” he said.
Tudos said the 24-year-old victim was a foreign exchange student, but his name has not been released.
The driver of the black Honda, a 36-year-old Oshawa man, was treated in hospital for his injuries and then taken into custody. His name was also not immediately released.
“Charges are pending,” Tudos said,
He urged anyone with information, including witnesses who have not yet spoken to investigators or anyone with dash cam video that might be helpful, to come forward to police.
