May be, oak costs about 3.5 per sq feet. Some wood costs like 8.5 per sq. So it is 1500 dollar more.

You have to sure they will use different wood not the same wood with different surface treatment.

designer asks $1500 for stain change, but not the wood.
I found the same oak in homedepot, it costs 6.99 /sq ft with different stain choices.

now, my questions are:
is it worth to change the stain only?
should I change the wood instead?

P. S. When talking about the surface treatment, I was told the supplier had environmental friendly cut, environmental friendly treated and stained solid wood. That's why the price is way up higher than the regular flooring.

It is bullshit. It costs same for them to change the stain.

But oak is neutral color. It isn't impressive by itself, but It goes with everything.

The yellowish oak is so common in the old days. You may find a little bit boring and not impressive. Maybe you can try some darker color like gunstock, early American, or English cherrynut. Believe me, it looks much impressive for oak. The other choice is to change to other wood. Maple looks very nice, but easy to get scratch and damaged, not because of the hardness, as maple doesn't have any grain. Any damage will be shown. Birch/cherry looks nice too, but soft. Exotic wood seems to be the trend, you need more money.

Thank you very much for your advice.
I don't quite understand the Exotic wood. would you please explain it?

You can google to get better answer. From my understanding, the exotic hardwood means those hardwoods imported from outside of north America, especially refers to Latin American tropical hard wood.

Thank you very much for your advice.
