Since being elected, Mayor O’Brien’s determination has brought exciting, new, city-building initiatives to life that include:

• the new and improved Light Rail Transit plan – including an underground tunnel to finally resolve downtown congestion. Larry O’Brien is now poised to execute this plan and serve generations of Ottawa residents. The Mayor’s vision is to complete an efficient transit system that spans from east to west, and north to south across the entire city;
• a plan to restore Lansdowne Park to its former glory – the “Jewel of the Rideau” will once again serve as a hub of professional sports entertainment, community gathering, commercial enterprise, and useable green space;
• significant investment in aging sewer infrastructure and a plan to preserve and protect the Ottawa River for the foreseeable future;
• the construction of a world-class Convention Centre – including plans for new tradeshow space to attract economic investment;
• major construction of road and transportation infrastructure – including the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge, extensions to Limebank Road, and the completion of the Terry Fox Drive extension.

  • Capital: $1.12 billion
  • Operating: $332 million
• New Cancer Care Centre opening at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital.
• New skills trade centre being built at Algonquin College and La Cité.
• $33 million secured to clean-up the Ottawa River.
• $154 in Provincial gas tax for OC Transpo.
• Over 1,080 new affordable housing units and rent supplements delivered for Ottawa.
• 101 new police officers hired through a 50/50 cost sharing program with the city.
• Provincial funding secured for the new Convention Centre.
• Secured FIFA under 20 soccer matches; 2 Ontario games; Genie Awards; 2009 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship; and funding to support these initiatives.
• Secured funding for several major arts projects, such as Shenkman Arts Centre, GCTC, La Nouvelle Scène and Centrepointe Theatre.
• Secured $600 million for mass transit, up from $200 million.
• Uploads of Social Services and Court Security will save Ottawa over $122 million.
